Construction Details
ROOF CONSTRUCTION AND COVERING
The roof is erected immediately after the main frame is completed and checked.
The construction of the roof and its coverings (which are various) should be carried out in sequence as follows:
1. Carpentry formations
1.1 Framing of fascia
1.2 Firring on steel transverse beams. This stage may on occasion be omitted where a camber has been allowed for in the main beams.
1.3 Timber formations on column and cills, including vertical battens where required on the inside of the columns to receive the first internal partition panel in any given run. This stage applies only where fire or other preformed column casings are not used.
2. Roof decking
2.1 Metal decks are used and should be installed according to manufacturer's instructions in conjunction with elemental/architect's drawings. Specialist contractors may carry out this operation.
3. Roof coverings
These may be of various types e.g. a modified form of built-up roofing, plastic film or metal sheeting and should be laid according to the manufacturer's/architect's instructions. Rainwater outlets should be formed at the same time as the roof finish is being laid and these require attendance by the general contractor.
Where roof lights are incorporated the curbs should be in position before the roof is laid, and accurately positioned in relation to the ceiling grid.
4. The fascia should be installed at the same time as the roof deck and completed before the roof is finished so that the edge trim can be easily fixed in position.
The main elements of the design were the cladding panel. The first manual illustrated them used to construct the Hospital Board's own offices.
