Early Oxford Method buildings used woodwool slabs to timber firrings with a built up roofing felt and chippings. Gutters were formed in metal preformed troughs with timber fillets and roofing felt. Metal trough decking became the preferred method of decking and was described in the preferred system. Over the life span of 2 & 3M Oxford Method buildings, many roof coverings have been replaced. Some buildings have had pitched roofs constructed above the old felt roof.The variety of roof finishes has been at the direction of the various Health Trust technical departments. To the top of the metal decking a polystyrene secured by bitumen has been used. A range of insulation boards and finishes in a built up roofing felt. It is important that the weight of the materials used is considered. The roof was designed for a lightweight system and if asphalt is considered a Structural Engineer must be consulted.
